February is here and it is time to reveal what color is crowned as color of the month. The one we choose was recently announced Color of the year 2019 by the Pantone color institute. It is PANTONE LIVING CORAL 16-1546 - a punchy, optimistic, “life affirming”, warm, vibrant and expressive shade of coral.

For 20 years, Pantone’s Color of the Year has influenced product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home furnishings, and industrial design, as well as product, packaging, and graphic design. The Color of the Year selection process requires thoughtful consideration and trend analysis.

Looking back at the hues that have been anointed Pantone’s color of the year over the past decade or so, it became clear that we were overdue for a vivid warm tone. And in fact, Pantone did choose a member of the orange family this year, a rich shade that evokes sunsets and the marine life, which inspired its name, Living Coral.

Described by Pantone as an 'animating and life-affirming shade of orange with a golden undertone', Living coral draws inspiration from two key areas.

Firstly, it takes inspiration from one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on earth – coral reefs and makes statement about their future. It  draws attention to the beauty of corals, a living organism that is dying fast due to our increasingly warming oceans. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute wrote: ‘It does have some social significance today in that we are concerned about protecting our eco system. For many people, coral reefs hit a very responsive core; we want to preserve them. Living Coral reinstates that feeling – it's a nurturing colour and we need to preserve what’s in the ocean.”

Living Coral is also sociable and spirited and encourages light-hearted activity, which leads us to the second key inspiration. With digital technology and social media becoming increasingly embedded into our daily life, it symbolises our need for optimism and embodies our desire for playful expression.

So how can we use this playful shade in our home? Living Coral will add a dramatic pop of colour to any room. Think decorative accessories and accents – cosy blankets and lush upholsteries – or make a bold move with a feature wall to help aid a comforting and nurturing feeling in your living space.

If you want to make coral pop even more combine it with the complementary blue family. Blue really makes the coral pop – just as it does in the ocean, or a beautiful blue sky and a sunset. It makes for a dynamic combination. We can also use it with blue green, which is always a beautiful combination.

We created a styling that shows you one of the many options of living coral combinations. We combined it with dusty pink, deep red and grey for a nostalgic vibe.
